duolingo
— duolingo design studio
Over these two summers, I had the opportunity to be a part of Duolingo's Design Studio. I created multiple vector illustrations of the Duolingo world characters to be used within the app and other marketing events. Adapting to the style guide, I learned about the characters, inside and out. Simplicity (+ heart!) was key in these illustrations!
MONTHLY CHALLENGES
Duolingo's Monthly Challenges invite users to complete a certain number of lessons within a month, and doing so wins them a badge! Each month has a different theme. I conceptualized two illustrations for the months of August and October, the former being "Owlympics" and the latter being Halloween.
collaborative short animation
I also had the opportunity to collaborate with my fellow animation intern, Liliana Cantillo, to create a 30-second animation based on the world characters, Zari and Lily, as a visual development artist.
CONCEPT Zari, an excitable ray of sunshine, is in her own world, bopping along to some K-POP down a high school hallway, while Lily, her deadpan emo best friend, quietly defends her from the other judgmental, hater kids.
STYLE FRAME While still very much within the Duolingo style, we opted for more experimental, stylistic lighting to truly emphasize the dreamscape feel of being in Zari's own world.
COLOR SCRIPT There are three main "worlds" that we had to emphasize in this short, and that is: Zari's world, judgmental normal kids' world, and Lily's world. We had to reflect the personalities of these three worlds using color. They had to be contrasting enough so that the personality differences in each are highlighted, but also complimentary enough that it's not too jarring going from one scene to the next.

I illustrated icons for DuoArcade, a collection of minigames for Duolingo Web.
